Most Wimbledon titles: Navratilova and Federer

Navratilova won nine between 1978 and 1990, one more than Helen Wills Moody, and Federer won eight from 2003 to 2017, one more than William Renshaw, Pete Sampras and Novak Djokovic, the joint record holder for majors overall in our count of Grand Slam titles. In all, 67 men and 54 women have won Wimbledon, 32 of the men and 23 of the women more than once.

Renshaw won six in a row from 1881 to 1886, when the holder played only the Challenge Round, and Navratilova six from 1982 to 1987; Laurence Doherty, Bjorn Borg and Federer won five straight.

Wimbledon champions by country, and the British winners

British players have won 37 gentlemen's titles and 36 ladies', counting the British Isles players of the early years, and Americans 33 and 57. The first 30 gentlemen's titles all went to British players, until Norman Brookes of Australia won in 1907, as did the first 21 ladies' titles, until May Sutton of the United States in 1905.

Fred Perry's third title, in 1936, was the last by a British man for 77 years, until Andy Murray won in 2013. Virginia Wade, in 1977, is still the last British woman, 48 Championships ago. In the Open Era the United States leads both events, with 15 gentlemen's titles and 29 ladies', but no American man has won since Sampras in 2000.

Amateur era vs Open Era, and first-time Wimbledon champions

First-time champions have become rarer in the gentlemen's event. In the 81 Championships before 1968, 46 men won it and first-time champions took 57 percent of the titles; in the 58 since, 23 men have won it and first-timers took 36 percent. Federer, Djokovic, Sampras and Borg won 27 of those 58, and from 2003 to 2022 Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic won 17 of 19, Murray the other two.

The ladies' event has moved the other way: 29 women won it in the 74 amateur Championships and 27 in the 58 since. The last nine champions all won it for the first time, the longest such run in the event's history; the last woman to win it again was Serena Williams, in 2016. Since 2003 only six men have won a first gentlemen's title: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner. Noskova is the seventh woman since 2000 whose first major came at Wimbledon; Federer, in 2003, is the last man.

Seeds and unseeded Wimbledon champions

Since seeding by merit began in 1927, the No. 1 seed has won 43 of the 93 gentlemen's titles and 44 of the 93 ladies'. From 1968 to 1999 the women's top seed won 18 of 32 and the men's 12; since 2000 it has been the reverse, 14 of 26 for the men's and six for the women's, as our analysis of top seeds at the majors shows.

Only three champions have been unseeded, all of them in the Open Era: Boris Becker in 1985, Goran Ivanisevic, a wildcard, in 2001, and Marketa Vondrousova in 2023. The lowest seed to win is Barbora Krejcikova, 31st in 2024.

Youngest and oldest Wimbledon champions

  • Youngest: Lottie Dod, 15 years and 285 days old in 1887, and Becker, 17 years and 227 days in 1985.
  • Oldest: Arthur Gore, 41 years and 182 days in 1909, and Charlotte Cooper Sterry, 37 years and 282 days in 1908.
  • Open Era: Martina Hingis, 16 in 1997, is the youngest champion; Federer, 35 in 2017, and Serena Williams, 34 in 2016, are the oldest.
  • 2026: Sinner was 24 and Noskova 21 on the day of their finals; champions at all four majors are compared in our piece on Grand Slam champions' ages.

Wimbledon finals: straight sets or a deciding set

Counting from the scores, 62 of the 137 gentlemen's finals played to a finish, 45 percent, went in straight sets and 35 to a fifth set, leaving out a walkover in 1931 and a retirement in 1911. In the ladies' event, 90 of 132 finals, 68 percent, took two sets.

Deciding sets are more common now: since 1968, 17 of 58 gentlemen's finals have gone five sets, 29 percent, against 23 percent before, and 22 of 58 ladies' finals three, 38 percent, against 27. The last five-set gentlemen's final was in 2023, when Alcaraz beat Djokovic, and four of the last six ladies' finals went to a third set. At the other extreme, Iga Swiatek's 6-0, 6-0 win over Amanda Anisimova in 2025 was the first ladies' final without a game for the loser since Dorothea Douglass Chambers beat Dora Boothby in 1911.

Finals that repeat: the pairings that kept meeting

Open Era gentlemen's finals have often been rematches. Of the 58 since 1968, 13 paired two men who had already met in a Wimbledon final: six of the 32 up to 1999 and seven of the 26 since 2000, 27 percent. Roger Federer is behind much of that run, with nine of his 12 finals against Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, three each. He beat Roddick every time and Nadal in 2006 and 2007, then lost to Nadal in 2008 and to Djokovic in 2014, 2015 and 2019. Before him Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker met in three finals in a row, from 1988 to 1990.

The most frequent Open Era pairing in either event is Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova: five finals between 1978 and 1985, all won by Navratilova, who also met Steffi Graf in three, winning in 1987 and losing in 1988 and 1989. Venus and Serena Williams met in four, in 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2009, Serena winning three.

The 2026 Wimbledon finals

Sinner, the No. 1 seed, beat Alexander Zverev, the No. 2, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday, July 12, according to the official draw, for a second straight title and a fifth major; in both finals Sinner lost the first set. The day before, Noskova, seeded ninth, beat Karolina Muchova, the 10th seed, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, according to the ladies' draw, in the first all-Czech singles final at Wimbledon.

Czech players have won three of the last four ladies' titles, after Vondrousova in 2023 and Krejcikova in 2024, and six in all; Sinner's two are the only titles won by an Italian. Results from the tournaments in play are on the Vertize tennis scores page.

Where the numbers come from: every gentlemen's singles final since 1877 and ladies' since 1884, 139 and 132, from the All England Club's Wimbledon Compendium 2025, with every final to 2024, nationalities, seeds, dates of birth and the date of each final, and from the official draws of 2025 (gentlemen's and ladies') and 2026. Every final was checked against Wikipedia's lists of gentlemen's and ladies' champions; one score differs, in 1878. Countries are the club's, with British Isles players counted as British; seeds by merit from 1927; ages to the day of the final; whether a title was a first major comes from the champion lists of all four majors. Rematches are counted from the two finalists named in each final, with Chris Evert's two names treated as one player. See also our methodology. Data collected October 21, 2026.
