The 2026 season has 30 clubs, 15 in each league, and each plays 162 games between the March 25 opener and the final day, Sunday, September 27. Twelve teams advance to a postseason that opens with the Wild Card Series on September 29 and closes with a World Series scheduled to begin on October 23.

MLB FAQ
How many teams make the MLB playoffs?
Twelve, six in each league: the three division winners plus the three best records among the other clubs, known as wild cards. The two division winners with the best records skip the first round, and seeds three to six meet in best-of-three Wild Card Series, with every game at the higher seed's ballpark.
When is the 2026 World Series?
Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, and a Game 7, if needed, for Saturday, October 31, so no November baseball is planned. The best-of-seven series starts at the home of the pennant winner with the better regular-season record, which holds home-field advantage.
How are ties in the MLB standings broken?
With math, not extra games: tiebreaker games, the old Game 163, were dropped in 2022 when the postseason grew to 12 teams. Head-to-head record between the tied clubs comes first, then record against division opponents, then record against all teams in their own league.
Who won the 2025 World Series?
The Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games, winning a 5-4 Game 7 in 11 innings in Toronto. They became the first club to repeat as champions since the New York Yankees won three straight titles from 1998 to 2000.
