The season runs from Nov. 1, 2026, through the conference tournaments to Selection Sunday on March 14, 2027, and then comes the first 76-team NCAA tournament, which ends at Ford Field in Detroit on April 5. Michigan starts the year as the reigning national champion.

When does the 2026-27 college basketball season start?
On Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, when Notre Dame and Villanova open the season in Rome at 9:30 a.m. ET, believed to be the first men's college basketball season opener played abroad. The first full day of games in the United States is Monday, Nov. 2.
Who won the 2026 men's national championship?
Michigan. The Wolverines beat UConn 69-63 on April 6, 2026, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for their first national title since 1989.
How many teams are in the 2027 NCAA tournament?
Seventy-six, up from 68, in the first year of the expanded field. The 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large teams meet in 12 Opening Round games, and the winners fill out the 64-team bracket.
