Seattle began the 2026 season as the defending champion, having beaten New England in Super Bowl LX, and the two teams met again in the opener on Wednesday, September 9. The regular season runs 18 weeks, through January 10, 2027, before 14 of the 32 teams move on to the playoffs.

NFL FAQ
How many teams are in the NFL?
There are 32 teams, split evenly between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference has four divisions (East, North, South and West) of four teams, and every team plays each of its three division rivals twice a season, once at home and once away.
How do the NFL playoffs work?
Fourteen teams qualify, seven from each conference. The four division winners are seeded 1 to 4 by record, and the three best remaining teams are seeded 5 to 7. Only the No. 1 seed gets a first-round bye; on Wild Card Weekend, No. 2 hosts No. 7, No. 3 hosts No. 6 and No. 4 hosts No. 5.
How are ties in the NFL standings broken?
The NFL uses a fixed sequence of tiebreakers. Two teams tied for a division title are separated by head-to-head results, then division record, record in common games, conference record and strength of victory. A wild-card tie between teams from different divisions starts with head-to-head, then conference record. A coin toss is the last step.
When and where is Super Bowl LXI?
Super Bowl LXI is on Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the ninth Super Bowl held in the Los Angeles area. The two teams are decided in the AFC and NFC Championship Games on Sunday, January 31.
