The 2026 world championship opened in Melbourne on March 8, the first season since 2016 with 11 teams and 22 cars on the grid: Cadillac joined as a new team and Audi took over the Sauber operation. Every car is built to a new rulebook that reshaped the power units, the aerodynamics and the size of the cars.

What changed in Formula 1 for 2026?
A new set of technical rules. About half of each power unit's output is now electrical and the fuel is fully sustainable, the cars are shorter, narrower and lighter, with the minimum weight down from 800 kg to 768 kg, and movable front and rear wings switch between high-downforce and low-drag settings.
What replaced DRS in 2026?
An overtake mode. When a driver is within one second of the car ahead at a set point on the track, the car gets a little extra electrical power for the whole of the next lap. It takes the place of DRS, the drag reduction system used through 2025.
Who supplies F1 engines in 2026?
Five manufacturers build power units under the 2026 rules: Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda, Audi and Red Bull Powertrains, which works with Ford. Cadillac, the new 11th team, uses Ferrari power units for now and plans to build its own by 2029.
