FBS has 138 teams in 2026. Conference champions are crowned on December 4-5, and the national champion is decided by the 12-team College Football Playoff, which opens on December 18 and ends with the title game in Las Vegas in late January.

Which teams joined FBS in 2026?

North Dakota State and Sacramento State, which moved up from FCS on July 1 and took FBS to 138 teams. North Dakota State plays football in the Mountain West and Sacramento State in the MAC, and both are eligible for the postseason right away.

How does the 2026-27 College Football Playoff work?

The 12-team field is filled and seeded using the selection committee's final rankings. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions qualify automatically, one bid is reserved for the Group of Six, and Notre Dame is in if it ranks in the top 12. Seeds 1-4 get byes; seeds 5-12 play first-round games on the higher seed's campus.

Where are the Playoff quarterfinals, semifinals and title game played?

The quarterfinals and semifinals are six bowl games, and the final is in Las Vegas. The Fiesta Bowl hosts a quarterfinal on December 30 and the Cotton, Rose and Peach bowls on January 1; the Orange (January 14) and Sugar (January 15) bowls host the semifinals, and the title game is Monday, January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium.
