About the College Basketball rankings
Here are the college basketball rankings from both major polls, the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll, listing every ranked team's record and its rise or fall from one week to the next. Until the first 2026-27 polls come out, the page shows the final rankings of 2025-26.
The 2026-27 season starts on Nov. 1, 2026, and both polls then move weekly through conference play and into March. They are votes, not formulas, so a team can climb without playing a game when teams above it lose.
How to use the College Basketball rankings
- Read the AP Top 25 first and the Coaches Poll below it; each lists rank, team and record.
- Use the Trend column: an up arrow means places gained since last week, a down arrow places lost.
- Compare the two polls to see where media voters and coaches disagree about a team.
- See when ranked teams play next on the Top 25 schedule.
College Basketball rankings FAQ
When does the preseason AP Top 25 come out?
In mid-October, before the season opens on Nov. 1. From November to April a new men's poll is released every Monday at 1 p.m. ET, and the final poll comes out after the NCAA tournament.
How is the AP Top 25 decided?
By a vote of about 60 writers and broadcasters who cover college basketball. Each ranks 25 teams: a first-place vote is worth 25 points, second place 24 and so on down to one point for 25th, and the point totals set the order.
Who votes in the Coaches Poll?
A board of Division I head coaches, 31 of them in 2025-26, all members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Like the AP voters, they rank 25 teams, and the Coaches Poll also publishes a final ranking after the NCAA tournament.
Do the polls decide who makes the NCAA tournament?
No. The AP poll plays no part in selection or seeding. The selection committee chooses the 44 at-large teams and seeds the field, and its primary sorting tool is the NCAA's NET ranking, which weighs quality wins and efficiency adjusted for opponent and location.
