About the College Football rankings
College football rankings for the 2026 season: the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll as they stand this week, with each team's record, its poll points and how many places it moved since the previous poll.
Both polls began with preseason editions in August and are updated every week of the season. From November 3 the College Football Playoff selection committee publishes its own rankings as well, and that ranking, not the AP Top 25 or the Coaches Poll, is used to select and seed the 12-team Playoff field on Selection Day, December 6.

- The AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll are shown one after the other, each ranked from 1 to 25.
- Each row gives the team's record, its poll points and how far it moved since last week's poll.
- Arrows show how many places each team rose or fell.

College Football rankings FAQ
How does the AP Top 25 poll work?
Media members vote, and each of them, 69 for the 2026 preseason poll, ranks 25 teams. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, second place 24 and so on down to 1 point for 25th, and the point totals set the order shown in the Pts column.
How is the Coaches Poll different from the AP poll?
It is voted on by coaches instead of media members. The American Football Coaches Association runs it as the US LBM Coaches Poll, with a panel of FBS head coaches drawn at random, conference by conference, from those willing to take part; points work the same way as in the AP poll.
When are new college football rankings released?
Most weeks on Sunday. During the season the AP Top 25 usually comes out at 2 p.m. ET and the Coaches Poll the same afternoon. The 2026 preseason polls were published on August 4 (Coaches) and August 17 (AP), and the AP adds a final poll after the national championship game.
Who picks the College Football Playoff rankings?
A 13-member selection committee whose members have backgrounds as coaches, players, athletic directors, college administrators and journalists. It ranks teams on their results, using strength of schedule, head-to-head results and results against common opponents to separate comparable teams, and its final ranking on Selection Day seeds the 12-team field.
