Two points for a win and one for an overtime or shootout loss. The top three in each division and two wild cards per conference make the playoffs; teams level on points are split by games played, then regulation wins (RW), then regulation and overtime wins (ROW). About the NHL standings
The NHL standings on this page show all 32 teams four ways: by division, in the wild card race, by conference and league-wide. Every table carries games played, wins, regulation losses, overtime losses, points, points percentage, regulation wins (RW), regulation and overtime wins (ROW), goals for and against, goal differential, the last ten games and the current streak.
A win is worth two points however it comes, and a loss in overtime or a shootout is worth one. Sixteen teams reach the Stanley Cup playoffs: the top three in each of the four divisions, plus two wild cards in each conference, which go to the two best remaining teams regardless of division.

- Green rows are the top three in a division; the lighter band in the wild card table marks the two wild card places.

How are ties broken in the NHL standings?
When teams finish level on points, the NHL looks first at games played, so the team with the better points percentage goes ahead. Then come regulation wins, regulation plus overtime wins (shootout wins excluded), total wins, points in games between the tied teams, goal differential and goals scored. This table applies the first four steps and keeps ESPN's order after that.
What is the difference between RW and ROW?
RW counts only wins in regulation time. ROW adds wins in overtime but still leaves out shootout wins. Both exist to reward teams that win games outright, and both come before total wins in the tiebreak order.
How does the NHL wild card work?
In each conference, the top three teams in both divisions qualify automatically. The two best of the remaining teams, from either division, take the wild cards. In the first round, the division winner with the conference's best record plays the lower wild card, and the other division winner plays the higher one.
