AFL FAQ

How many teams make the AFL finals?

Ten, since 2026. The top six go straight into the finals series, while seventh to tenth play a Wildcard Round first: seventh hosts tenth and eighth hosts ninth. The two winners join the top six, and from there the series runs as the old top-eight system did, through to the Grand Final.

When does the 2027 AFL season start?

The AFL has said Round 1 of 2027 will be a traditional nine-game round involving all 18 clubs, starting on Wednesday March 17 or Thursday March 18 and ending on Sunday March 21. The 2027 Grand Final is set for Saturday October 2. The full fixture had not been published on October 4, 2026.

When does Tasmania join the AFL?

In 2028, when the Tasmania Devils become the competition's 19th club, with the new stadium at Macquarie Point in Hobart as their home ground. Until then the AFL stays at 18 clubs, so the 2027 season will look like 2026.
