The count uses nflverse's play-by-play data through Week 8 of 2026, which ended Monday, Nov. 2. Figures are regular season unless noted, and blocked kicks count as misses.
Longest field goal in NFL history: how the record moved
Little's kick ended the first half in Las Vegas and broke the 66 yards of Justin Tucker's game-winner for the Baltimore Ravens in 2021. On Jan. 4, 2026, he hit from 67, the second-longest ever and the longest outdoors. All five kicks of 65 yards or longer came in 2021 or later.
The Hall of Fame's history starts with Glenn Presnell's 54 in 1934 and Bert Rechichar's 56 in 1953. Tom Dempsey's 63 in 1970 was tied three times and stood until Matt Prater's 64 in 2013.

NFL field goal percentage by distance
Since 1999, kickers have made 82.8 percent of tries, 62.0 percent from 50 yards or more and 30.6 percent from 60 or more. In 2021-2025 they made more than half from every exact distance through 60 yards; in 1999-2003 the first distance below half was 53.

| Yards | Tries | Rate | 1999-2003 | 2021-2025 |

Single yards are noisy, so we also used a rolling three-yard window and found where the share of good kicks falls through 50 percent: 53.4 yards in 1999-2003, 55.3 in 2004-2009, 58.2 in 2010-2015, 57.6 in 2016-2020 and 61.4 in 2021-2025, a gain of eight yards. A logistic curve fitted to all kicks gives 51.1 for the first period and 60.5 for the last.
These are kicks coaches chose to try, so the long end leans toward strong legs and good conditions. But the filter has loosened: tries from 55 yards or more went from 53 in 1999-2003 to 414 in 2021-2025, and the share made from 20.8 percent to 59.7. Kickers now make tries from 50 or more (68.6 percent) more often than they made those from 40 to 49 in 1999-2003 (66.0).
How often are 50-yard field goals made? The 60-yard field goal percentage
- Exactly 50 yards: 68.3 percent since 1999; 56.2 in 1999-2003, 75.4 in 2021-2025.
- 50 or more: 2,425 of 3,914, 62.0 percent; 51.1 in 1999-2003, 68.6 in 2021-2025.
- Exactly 60: 16 of 39, 41.0 percent; 9 of 17 in 2021-2025.
- 60 or more: 53 of 173, 30.6 percent; 0 of 9 in 1999-2003, 30 of 68 in 2021-2025, 12 of 22 in 2025.
Our study of NFL scoring tracks 50-yard kicks by year: 37 made in 2000, 195 in 2024.
Most 60-yard field goals: Brandon Aubrey leads the surge
Only four 60-yarders were made before 1999, and kickers then went 0 for 15 through 2005. They made 12 in 2025 alone, on 22 tries, as many as in the 18 seasons from 1999 to 2016 combined. Of the 57 made in NFL history, 34 came since 2021.

| Kicker | Made | Tries | Longest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brandon Aubrey | 7 | 13 | 65 |
| Brett Maher | 4 | 4 | 63 |
| Cam Little | 3 | 4 | 68 |
| Matt Prater | 3 | 5 | 64 |
| Greg Zuerlein | 3 | 9 | 61 |
Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys had the NFL record with six through 2025 and added a 60-yarder on Sept. 20, 2026, for seven through games of Nov. 2. His three in 2025 are the most in one season. Long tries get blocked more: 17 of 173 from 60 or more, 9.8 percent, against 2.1 percent of all tries.
Is altitude the edge? Denver, domes and wind
It was. Denver has hosted 3.1 percent of games since 1999, 4.2 percent of tries from 50 or more and 4.5 percent of makes. Kickers have made 66.7 percent there, 8.1 points above what other kicks from the same distances and years predict. But that gap comes from before 2014: +16.1 points through 2013, on 76 tries, and +1.2 since, on 89. Denver's rate barely moved, 67.1 percent to 66.3; everyone else caught up. From 60 yards or more, Denver is 2 for 12.
| Conditions | Tries | Made | Rate | Expected | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Denver | 165 | 110 | 66.7% | 58.5% | +8.1 |
| Indoors | 1,234 | 813 | 65.9% | 60.9% | +4.9 |
| Open air elsewhere | 2,513 | 1,500 | 59.7% | 66.0% | −6.3 |
| Wind under 10 mph | 1,687 | 1,028 | 60.9% | 63.0% | −2.0 |
| Wind 10 to 14 mph | 569 | 333 | 58.5% | 62.2% | −3.7 |
| Wind 15 mph or more | 243 | 132 | 54.3% | 60.5% | −6.2 |
Roofs are the steadier edge. Indoor games are 25.0 percent of the schedule but produced 22 of the 53 makes from 60 or more, at 39.3 percent against 26.9 in the open air outside Denver and Mexico City, and the gap from 50-plus is still +4.0 points since 2014. Little's 68 and Tucker's 66 were indoors. Wind cuts the other way: 54.3 percent from 50-plus at 15 mph or more here, 59.1 for 2015-2025 with playoffs in our weather study.
How many of the longest field goals were game-winners
Few. Of the 53 makes from 60 or more since 1999, 10 were game-winners, all with 68 seconds or less on the clock. Tucker's 66 and Graham Gano's 63 for the Carolina Panthers are the longest. Four more tied the score late; only Aubrey's 64 against the New York Giants led to a win. Most long kicks are last-second shots:
- Last 10 seconds of the first half: 96 tries, 28 made.
- Last 10 seconds of the second half or overtime: 37 tries, 7 made.
- More time on the clock: 40 tries, 18 made.
That last group is new. From 1999 to 2010 it was 2 of 34 tries from 60 or more; since 2021, 24 of 77. Aubrey has 6 of its 18 makes, including the only two of 63 yards or longer.
Longest field goal in Super Bowl history and the playoffs
The longest field goal in Super Bowl history is 57 yards, by Butker in Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11, 2024, in the Chiefs' 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers. It broke a 55-yarder by Jake Moody of the 49ers from the same game, which had broken Steve Christie's 54 from 1994.
The playoff record is 58 yards, shared by Pete Stoyanovich of the Miami Dolphins, in January 1991, and Gano, in January 2018. No one has made a 60-yarder in the playoffs: the only two tries since 1999, from 63, both missed.
Longest field goal in 2026 so far
Through Week 8, the longest make of 2026 is 64 yards by Tyler Loop of the Ravens against the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 4. The longest try was Little's 70-yarder against the New England Patriots on Sept. 27, wide right.
- 50 or more: 89 of 134, 66.4 percent, against 69.5 at the same point of 2025.
- 55 or more: 42 of 64, 65.6 percent. Both are the most tries through eight weeks since 1999.
- 60 or more: 4 of 9.

How this was built: every field-goal try in the NFL regular season and playoffs from 1999 through Week 8 of 2026, 28,277 in all, from nflverse's play-by-play data, downloaded on Nov. 4, 2026; three games from 1999 and 2000 have no play-by-play. Kicks wiped out by a penalty do not count. Distances match the Hall of Fame's longest kick of each season for 1999-2015 and NFL.com's 2021, 2025 and 2026 tables; Wikipedia's list omits Brandon McManus's 61 of Jan. 2, 2022, which NFL.com has. Our 50-yard makes match our scoring study except for one kick each in 2001 and 2002; its attempts leave out blocked kicks.
