A sprint is a 100-kilometer race, about a third of a Grand Prix, run on Saturday of a sprint weekend. To see what it settles, we went through formula1.com's official results for all 30 sprint weekends, from Silverstone in July 2021 to Singapore on October 10, 2026: the sprint result and sprint grid, the Grand Prix result and starting grid, and the final drivers' standings of every season.
Every F1 sprint winner since 2021
Eight drivers have won a sprint. Verstappen has 14, all for Red Bull. Lando Norris, for McLaren, and George Russell, for Mercedes, have four each, and Oscar Piastri has three, all in Qatar, the only three sprints held there. Valtteri Bottas won two for Mercedes in 2021, and Sergio Pérez, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli one each.
By team, Red Bull has 15 sprint wins and McLaren and Mercedes seven each. Ferrari's only one is Hamilton's in China in 2025, which formula1.com called the first win for Hamilton at Ferrari.

Does the sprint winner win the Grand Prix?
Usually not. The sprint winner won the Grand Prix in 11 of the 30 weekends, 37 percent, and finished on the Sunday podium in 23. The rate barely moved when the sprint stopped setting the Grand Prix grid in 2023: two of six before, nine of 24 since.
In 2021 and 2022 the sprint result was the Grand Prix grid, so five of the six winners started Sunday from pole. The sixth, Bottas at Monza in 2021, was sent to the back for using extra power unit parts, the official result notes. Even with pole in hand, only Verstappen at Imola in 2022 and Russell in São Paulo in 2022 turned the sprint into a Grand Prix win.
Of the seven sprint winners who missed the Sunday podium, three left without a result: Verstappen did not finish from pole at Silverstone in 2021, Hamilton was disqualified in China in 2025 and Russell did not finish in Canada in 2026. The worst classified finish was Antonelli's 15th at Silverstone in 2026.
Grand Prix pole was a better guide on the same weekends. The driver on pole won 13 of the 30 Grands Prix, 43 percent, and 11 of the 24 since 2023. Across every Grand Prix since 2000, pole has won 52 percent of the time.
How often sprint pole converts into a sprint win
Much more often. The driver on sprint pole won 19 of the 30 sprints, 63 percent. The sprint is short and has no pit stops, formula1.com explains, so the grid order has less time to change.
No sprint has been won from lower than fourth on the grid. Nineteen winners started from pole, seven from second and three from third, and the only one from fourth was Verstappen in China in 2024. The pole-sitter who fell furthest was Kevin Magnussen in São Paulo in 2022: on pole for Haas, eighth at the flag. No sprint pole-sitter has finished outside the points.
F1 sprint points: did they decide a championship?
Sprints pay more than they used to. The three sprints of 2021 handed out 18 points in all, 3-2-1 to the top three. The 2022 scale, eight points down to one for eighth, put 108 points on the table that year, and six sprints a season have been worth 216 points since 2023: 990 points in all so far.
| Season | Champion | Sprint pts | Runner-up | Sprint pts | Margin | Without sprints |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Max Verstappen | 7 | Lewis Hamilton | 2 | 8 | 3 |
| 2022 | Max Verstappen | 21 | Charles Leclerc | 17 | 146 | 142 |
| 2023 | Max Verstappen | 45 | Sergio Pérez | 25 | 290 | 270 |
| 2024 | Max Verstappen | 38 | Lando Norris | 30 | 63 | 55 |
| 2025 | Lando Norris | 29 | Max Verstappen | 32 | 2 | 5 |
| 2026 (so far) | Kimi Antonelli | 31 | George Russell | 34 | 102 | 105 |
None of the five titles from 2021 to 2025 would have changed without sprint points. The closest was 2025, which Norris won by two points even though Verstappen outscored Norris in sprints, 32 to 29: without them, the margin would have been five. In 2021 it went the other way, with Verstappen's 7 sprint points to Hamilton's 2 turning a three-point margin into eight.
Further down the 2022 table, sprints did matter. Without them, Charles Leclerc and Pérez would have been level on 291 points for second, and Carlos Sainz, fifth with 246 points, would have finished behind Hamilton. Across all six seasons, Verstappen has scored the most sprint points, 163, ahead of Norris with 119 and Leclerc with 118, who has 10 sprint podiums and no win.

How the F1 sprint format has changed since 2021
The format has changed almost every year:
- 2021: called Sprint Qualifying, a 100-kilometer Saturday race at three Grands Prix, its grid set by normal qualifying on Friday and its result setting the Grand Prix grid. The top three scored 3, 2 and 1, formula1.com announced, and the winner was credited with pole.
- 2022: points for the top eight, from 8 down to 1, and pole credited to the fastest driver in Friday qualifying instead, at Imola, the Red Bull Ring and Interlagos, according to formula1.com. The sprint still set the Grand Prix grid.
- 2023: six sprints and a separate Saturday-morning session to set the sprint grid, the Sprint Shootout, with segments of 12, 10 and 8 minutes. Friday qualifying set the Grand Prix grid, so the sprint no longer affected Sunday, formula1.com explained.
- 2024: the Shootout was renamed Sprint Qualifying and moved to Friday after the only practice session, with the sprint on Saturday before Grand Prix qualifying. Teams could change their cars after the sprint, formula1.com wrote.
- 2026: the same weekend order and the same 8-to-1 points, at six venues, three of them new to the format: Montreal, Zandvoort and Singapore, formula1.com said. Silverstone returned for the first time since 2021.
F1 sprint results in 2026
All six sprints of 2026 have been run. Russell won three, in China, Canada and the Netherlands; Norris won in Miami, Antonelli at Silverstone and Verstappen in Singapore. Russell and Leclerc share the most sprint points this season, 34 each, Leclerc without a sprint win, while Antonelli has 31.
The last of them, in Singapore, was on Saturday, October 10, at 17:00 local time, 5 a.m. Eastern. Verstappen won it from sprint pole, the official result shows, then won the Grand Prix from pole the next day: the first sprint and Grand Prix double of 2026, and the first since Norris in São Paulo in 2025.
Antonelli leads the drivers' standings with 340 points to Russell's 238, a 102-point lead that would be 105 without sprint points. The six Grands Prix left on the calendar, from the United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 23-25 to Abu Dhabi, have no sprints. The full table is on our F1 standings, the dates on the 2026 F1 schedule, and what Antonelli needs on our title-clinch scenarios.
There will be 10 sprints in 2027, formula1.com says. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi get their first, and Montreal, Silverstone, Monza, São Paulo and Lusail return. Interlagos, the only track with five sprints so far, will host its sixth.
