Where Antonelli Wins the 2026 Title, and Why the Calendar Matters

Kimi Antonelli wins the 2026 championship in 99.3 percent of 200,000 simulations of the races that are left, even after losing 15 points of his lead in Baku. With the full calendar, the likeliest place to seal it is São Paulo on November 8. If Qatar and Abu Dhabi are cancelled, it moves forward to Mexico City or Austin.

Antonelli has 302 points and eight wins from the first 15 Grands Prix, 66 more than his Mercedes teammate George Russell. The lead was 81 before Baku, where the race ran on a Saturday, a day early to avoid Azerbaijan's Remembrance Day: Russell won it, ahead of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, while Antonelli finished fifth. Eight Grands Prix are left, starting in Malaysia on Sunday, October 4.

The championship has been a Mercedes story since the opening weekends of the new regulations, and inside Mercedes it has been Antonelli's. He has won eight of the 15 races; the rest of the grid has seven between them: three for Russell, two for Lando Norris and one each for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

How many points are left, and why it depends on the Middle East

A Grand Prix win is worth 25 points and a sprint win 8, with no bonus for the fastest lap. With eight Grands Prix and one sprint to go, Singapore's, there are 208 points left, which is why nobody is mathematically out of it yet: Hamilton, 103 behind, can still reach Antonelli on paper.

The number is not settled, though. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were dropped in March because of the conflict in the Middle East, and Bahrain's race was moved to Sepang in Malaysia for October 4. The last two rounds, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, are still in doubt, and teams expect a final decision by mid-October. If both are cancelled and Imola replaces one of them, 183 points remain; if both are cancelled with no replacement, 158.

When can Antonelli clinch the title? Race by race

To find out, we replayed the rest of the season 200,000 times. Each remaining Grand Prix is drawn at random from the 15 already run, with every driver's result from that race kept together, and the Singapore sprint from the five sprints. Antonelli clinches the moment nobody can catch him with the points still available.

On the calendar as it stands, São Paulo is the favorite at 36%, ahead of Mexico City (27%) and Las Vegas (22%). Baku pushed every date back by about a race: before it, Mexico City led. He cannot do it in Malaysia or Singapore. Even if he won both, the sprint included, with Russell scoring nothing, he would lead by 124 points with 150 still to play for, so the earliest possible date is now Austin on October 25.

Take away Qatar and Abu Dhabi and every date moves forward. With Imola in their place, Mexico City becomes the likeliest (40%); with no replacement at all, Austin on October 25 leads at 44%, because after that weekend only 75 points would be left to play for, and Singapore comes back into play (13%). The calendar decision due by mid-October is, in practice, a decision about where the title is won.

Can Russell still win the championship?

On paper, yes. In our simulations, Russell takes the title 0.70 percent of the time, and nobody else gets closer. The simplest way to see how steep it is: even if Russell won every remaining race and the Singapore sprint with Antonelli second each time, he would cut only 57 points from the 66. Antonelli would have to fall to third or lower on a regular basis for the math to turn, and he has finished outside the top two in only 5 of the 15 races this year, Baku included.

What the simulation cannot see is change. Mercedes is bringing its first major upgrade since Canada to Malaysia, and a power-unit grid penalty is waiting for Russell in one of the coming races. Both are reasons the real season can differ from a replay of the old one, but neither is big enough to close 66 points on its own.

The youngest champion in Formula 1 history

Antonelli was born on August 25, 2006. Sebastian Vettel became the youngest world champion in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. If Antonelli seals the title in São Paulo he will be 20 years and 75 days old, and even the latest date on the calendar would beat Vettel's record by more than three years.

  • Austin, October 25: 20 years and 61 days.
  • Mexico City, November 1: 20 years and 68 days.
  • São Paulo, November 8: 20 years and 75 days.

F1 2026 title race: frequently asked questions

When is the earliest Antonelli can win the title? Austin on October 25. Malaysia and Singapore are out of reach even if he wins both and Russell scores nothing. Only if Qatar and Abu Dhabi are cancelled does Singapore, on October 11, come back into play.

Where is Antonelli most likely to clinch the title? São Paulo on November 8, in 36% of our simulations, if Qatar and Abu Dhabi go ahead. Without them, Mexico City or Austin become more likely.

How many points are left in the 2026 F1 season? 208 after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix: 25 for each of the eight Grands Prix and 8 for the Singapore sprint. That falls to 158 if Qatar and Abu Dhabi are cancelled.

Would Antonelli be the youngest F1 world champion? Yes. He turned 20 on August 25, and the record, set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010, is 23 years and 134 days.

How this was built: standings and race results from ESPN, as of September 28, after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The 15 Grands Prix and five sprints already run reproduce the official standings exactly. Each simulation draws the eight remaining Grands Prix from those 15 and the Singapore sprint from the five sprints, keeping every driver's result from the same race together. A title counts as clinched once no rival can reach the leader with the points left; ties would go to the driver with more wins. The 22-race case puts Imola last.
