Manchester City v Paris Saint-Germain

This is the tie of the week, at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday at 20:00 BST. City arrive with a perfect start: six wins from six in the Premier League, the latest a 3-0 win at Anfield on Sunday (our Liverpool v Man City report), and a 2-0 win at FC Porto on matchday 1 that has them eighth in the league phase. Paris Saint-Germain, who won the competition in 2025, beat Slovan Bratislava 6-1 in their opener and lead the table.

Enzo Maresca has no absentees and no doubts, according to UEFA's team news; Paris are without Mayulu, who has a muscle injury. There are reunions on both sides. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made 161 appearances for Paris between 2021 and 2025 and won the 2025 final with them, while Paris summer signing Ferran Torres scored 16 goals in 43 games for City between 2020 and 2022.

Erling Haaland has 59 goals in 59 Champions League matches. If he plays, he will hold the record for goals in a player's first 60 appearances in the competition, which Ruud van Nistelrooy set with 48, and he is level with Sergio Agüero on 36 as City's joint-top scorer in it, UEFA notes. The other numbers point both ways: City have lost one of their last 25 home group-stage or league-phase games, while Paris are unbeaten in 11 UEFA matches against English clubs, with eight wins and three draws, and Ousmane Dembélé has scored in five Champions League appearances in a row. City lead the head-to-head with four wins to two and two draws, but Paris won the last meeting 4-2 at home in the 2024-25 league phase.

Atlético Madrid v Manchester United

Manchester United go to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday at 20:00 BST fourth in the table after a 4-0 win over Sabah FK. Their league form is weaker. Saturday's 1-1 draw with ten-man Tottenham Hotspur, settled by a 92nd-minute equalizer, left Michael Carrick's side 13th in the Premier League with six points from six games (our Man United v Tottenham report). Atlético lost 2-1 at Liverpool on matchday 1 and are 25th.

The absences are all on United's side. UEFA's team news lists Patrick Dorgu, Tom Heaton, Kobbie Mainoo, Noussair Mazraoui, Luke Shaw and Manuel Ugarte as out, with Matthijs de Ligt and Benjamin Šeško doubtful; Atlético have no injuries or suspensions.

The record books lean toward United. Atlético have never won a Champions League group-stage or league-phase match against an English club, with four draws and seven defeats, and United have lost one of their last 11 games against Spanish opponents, according to UEFA. Atlético did win the last knockout meeting, a round-of-16 tie in 2021-22, 2-1 on aggregate. Matheus Cunha, now at United, scored seven goals in 54 games for Atlético between 2021 and 2023, and Atlético's Julián Alvarez played for Manchester City from 2022 to 2024.

AS Roma v Real Madrid

Wednesday's 20:00 BST game at the Olimpico brings José Mourinho back to Rome. UEFA's pre-match notes describe him as Madrid's coach; he managed Roma from 2021 to 2024, winning the 2021-22 Conference League. Real Madrid beat Internazionale 2-1 on matchday 1 and are 14th; Roma drew 1-1 at Fenerbahçe and are 17th.

Roma are without midfielder Bryan Cristante and goalkeeper Mile Svilar, with Koulierakis a doubt; Madrid are missing Raúl Asencio, Éder Militão and Rodrygo, according to UEFA's team news. Two Madrid defenders know the Olimpico from the home dressing room: Dean Huijsen played 14 games on loan at Roma in 2024 and Antonio Rüdiger made 72 appearances for the club between 2015 and 2017.

The clubs have met 12 times: eight Madrid wins, three for Roma and one draw. Madrid have won the last four without conceding and five of their six visits to Rome, but Roma have won eight of their last nine home Champions League matches. Kylian Mbappé, at 27 years and 298 days, can become the youngest player to reach 100 Champions League appearances, a record held by Lionel Messi at 28 years and 84 days, UEFA says.

Galatasaray v Barcelona

Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5-1 on matchday 1 and are third; Galatasaray lost 3-1 at Sporting CP and are 29th. The game at RAMS Park kicks off on Tuesday at 20:00 BST. Barcelona's games are rarely quiet: their last 31 Champions League matches have produced 141 goals, 4.55 per game, and they have not kept a clean sheet in 16 of them, according to UEFA.

Hansi Flick will be without Raphinha, who picked up a knock on international duty with Brazil, Legit.ng reported from his Friday press conference. Frenkie de Jong and Andreas Christensen are also out. Galatasaray are without Wilfried Singo, and Victor Osimhen's fitness had not been confirmed after he limped off against Istanbul Başakşehir and missed the trip to Lisbon.

He won't be available tomorrow or against Galatasaray.

Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk played in the club's only win over Barcelona, a 2-1 victory in November 1994, and that was his one Champions League appearance as a player. The Turkish side have won one of their last 22 games against Spanish clubs. İlkay Gündoğan, who scored five goals in 51 games for Barcelona in 2023-24, now plays for Galatasaray, and Lamine Yamal has 12 Champions League goals as a teenager, one short of Mbappé's record, UEFA notes.

The other English clubs

Arsenal v Lille (Tuesday, 20:00 BST, Emirates Stadium). Arsenal won 1-0 at Napoli on matchday 1 and came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 on Saturday, which keeps them second in the Premier League on 15 points (our Arsenal v Leeds report). They have won 13 league-phase matches in a row and kept five clean sheets in their last seven Champions League games, UEFA notes. William Saliba is out with a back problem, with Piero Hincapié and Martín Zubimendi doubtful. Lille lost 3-2 at home to Real Betis in their opener and have lost their last eight away games against English clubs. Gabriel made 52 appearances for Lille before joining Arsenal, and Viktor Gyökeres scored against them on his Champions League debut for Sporting in 2024.

Aston Villa v Fenerbahçe (Wednesday, 20:00 BST, Villa Park). Villa won 3-2 at Club Brugge on matchday 1, but they are 15th in the Premier League with five points and still without a league win at Villa Park after Saturday's 2-2 draw with Brentford (our Aston Villa v Brentford report). Europe has been different: Villa are unbeaten in 13 home European games, winning the last ten, and have beaten Fenerbahçe in all three meetings without conceding. Ian Maatsen is out, and Matteo Ruggeri, who went off against Brentford with a hamstring problem, is a doubt. Fenerbahçe drew 1-1 with Roma and are winless in eight Champions League games; Marco Asensio, on loan at Villa in 2024-25, and Romelu Lukaku, with eight goals in his last seven games against Villa, are the names to watch.

LASK Linz v Liverpool (Wednesday, 17:45 BST, Raiffeisen Arena). Liverpool beat Atlético 2-1 on matchday 1 but lost 3-0 to Manchester City on Sunday after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off, their first league defeat of the season. Andoni Iraola is without Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitiké and Giovanni Leoni, while Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai are doubts. LASK lost 1-0 at AEK Athens and are winless in six games against English clubs; Liverpool beat them 4-0 in the 2023-24 Europa League group stage, with two goals from Gakpo.

The club has not played at the Donbas Arena since 2014, and Chelsea, who have no European football this season, agreed to host, ESPN explains. Shakhtar drew 1-1 at PSV; AEK beat LASK 1-0.
  • Slovan Bratislava v VfB Stuttgart (Wed, 20:00 BST): Slovan lost 6-1 in Paris and have lost all nine of their Champions League matches; Stuttgart beat Viking 3-1.

The table after matchday 1

Sixteen teams won on matchday 1 and two games were drawn. Paris Saint-Germain lead on goal difference and goals scored, +5 from six goals, ahead of Bayern Munich, also on +5 with five, and Barcelona. All five English clubs won: Manchester United are fourth, Manchester City eighth, Aston Villa ninth, Liverpool 13th and Arsenal 16th. Atlético Madrid are 25th, and Bodø/Glimt are bottom.

The format is the one used since 2024-25. The 36 teams each play eight different opponents, four at home and four away, UEFA's draw report confirms. The UEFA format guide sets out what the final table is worth: the top eight go straight into the round of 16, the teams from ninth to 24th play two-legged knockout phase play-offs, and the teams from 25th down are out, with no route into the Europa League. Our table is computed from ESPN's results by points, goal difference and goals scored, with teams still level listed alphabetically, so it can differ from UEFA's order after one game.
