Form and the table

Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle are 11th with eight points from six games. Their total of 13 goals conceded is the joint-highest in the division, level with Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth, although they have scored in every league game. They are unbeaten at home, with a 2-1 win over Hull City and 2-2 draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth. On the road they won 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur, then lost 4-1 at Leeds United and 4-1 at Coventry. Their last five league results read W, D, L, W, L. In the League Cup they won 1-0 at Millwall on 8 September.

Villa are 16th with five points, level with 15th-placed Nottingham Forest and two points above AFC Bournemouth, who are 18th with three. They are without a home league win this season (one draw, two defeats) and have failed to score in three of their six games. Their only league win came at Tottenham, 3-2 on 19 September, and their last five league results read L, D, L, W, D. In the Champions League Villa won 3-2 at Club Brugge on matchday 1 and beat Fenerbahce 6-0 at Villa Park on Wednesday, with two goals each for Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley (our Aston Villa 6-0 Fenerbahce report has the details). They also won 3-1 at Coventry City in the League Cup on 16 September.

A win would take Newcastle to 11 points, and a Villa win would lift them to eight, level with Newcastle. Villa play three days after the Fenerbahce game, while Newcastle have not played since Monday. Villa's next Champions League match is at home to Viking FK on Wednesday 21 October. The full standings are on our Premier League table.

Team news

Bazoumana Touré, a 59th-minute substitute at Coventry, was replaced by Dan Burn in the 90th because of an injury, according to ESPN's match data; Newcastle's website had published no update on him by Wednesday. Burn, Amar Dedić, Joelinton and Will Osula all came back from injuries as substitutes in that game, the club said; for Joelinton it was a first competitive appearance since May, Newcastle's match report noted. Ewen Jaouen is out until the festive period with a hamstring injury, according to the club, and Anthony Elanga, who has two league goals according to ESPN, was not in the squad at Coventry.

We need to improve on the things we can control, and that's a lot right now.

Aston Villa will be without Matteo Ruggeri, who was injured in the draw with Brentford. Unai Emery gave an update at his press conference on Tuesday, reported by Sports Mole.

Ruggeri, we don't know exactly how long it's going to be, but it will be some weeks that he's going to be out, more than one month.

Emery said Ian Maatsen was not yet available but should be back with the squad in a few days or a week. George Hemmings missed the Fenerbahce game with what Emery called a small pain, and Emery said he might be back on Saturday; he also hoped Brian Madjo could join the group for Saturday. On Wednesday Leon Goretzka, back from injury, replaced Barkley in the 83rd minute and Alejandro Garnacho replaced Ibrahim Mbaye in the 79th. ESPN's match data lists both as injury substitutions, and no update on Barkley or Mbaye had been published in the reports we read by Wednesday night.
