Form and the Premier League table

Leeds are seventh on nine points after six games, with two wins, three draws and one defeat. They are level on points with Hull City, Liverpool and Ipswich Town but ahead of all three on goal difference, and one point behind Brentford, Everton and Chelsea, who sit fourth to sixth on 10. Their last five league games: 1-1 at home to Brentford, 1-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion, a 4-1 home win over Newcastle United, 0-0 at home to Crystal Palace and last Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, their only league loss so far. Leeds went out of the League Cup with a 6-3 defeat at Chelsea on 9 September and have not played since the Arsenal game.

Manchester United are 13th with six points from one win, three draws and two defeats: three points behind Leeds, 12 behind leaders Manchester City and three clear of 18th-placed AFC Bournemouth. Their last five league games: a 5-2 home win over Ipswich Town, a 2-2 draw at Everton, a 1-0 home defeat by Manchester City and 1-1 draws at Fulham and at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

United are without a win in five games in all competitions, a run Sky Sports also noted. Their last win was 4-0 at home to Sabah FK in the Champions League on 10 September. Since then they have also gone out of the League Cup, beaten 3-2 at home by Brighton & Hove Albion on 16 September, and lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, when Leny Yoro was sent off (our Atlético Madrid vs Man United report). Next up in Europe is Como away on Wednesday 21 October at 17:45 BST, three days after the trip to Leeds.

Leeds vs Man United team news

Leeds United: the latest injury news we could confirm dates from before the Arsenal game. In his pre-match press conference, Daniel Farke said Daniel James had returned from international duty with a back injury and was likely to join Joe Rodon on the sidelines, the club reported on 9 October. Harry Wilson and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya, both back in team training by then, came off the bench at the Emirates, Wilson in the 71st minute and Bahoya in the 86th.

Manchester United: Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo, who both started against Tottenham, did not travel to Madrid. Michael Carrick said on Monday that "Luke and Kobbie had issues in the game on Saturday" and that they were not ready for the Atlético game, Sports Mole reported. Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui were also out injured, the same report said, and Benjamin Sesko, who has had a recurrence of a shin problem, was due extra tests this week, with Carrick saying he had no clearer timeframe for his return. Dorgu hurt a hamstring playing for Denmark against Wales in the Nations League, Sports Mole reported on 28 September. Matthijs de Ligt, recovered from a long-term back problem, traveled to Madrid.

After the defeat, Lisandro Martínez used a post-match interview to criticize the lack of summer investment in the squad, Sky Sports reported, and Carrick said he had not seen it. On Wednesday night Martínez released a statement clarifying, but not apologizing for, his comments, Sky Sports added.

I expect more from our technical director.
