How Coventry won it
Both teams lined up in a 4-2-3-1, and Coventry went ahead early in front of a crowd of 30,811. In the 6th minute Lukáš Horníček failed to claim a loose ball in his box and, scrambling to recover it, fouled Cherif. Rudoni sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot, according to Newcastle's official match report. It was the first Premier League goal Coventry had scored at home this season; before this game they had scored once in five league matches.
Newcastle had most of the ball but did not take their chances before the break. Matias Fernandez-Pardo, still without a goal since his summer move from Lille, missed a chance to equalize and later had a shot blocked on the line by Bobby Thomas, the club's report said. Three minutes after half-time Coventry scored again. Newcastle failed to clear a long throw-in and Cherif, 19, hit a first-time right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner. It was his first goal for Coventry and came on his first Premier League start.
Newcastle's manager Matthias Jaissle changed three players in the 59th minute, sending on Amar Dedic, Bazoumana Touré and Joelinton for Lewis Miley, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock. In the 70th minute Botman pulled one back, a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top left corner, set up by Nico González. It was the defender's first goal since February.
Lampard had brought on Ellis Simms and Frank Onyeka in the 78th minute, and three minutes later Simms made it 3-1. Joelinton lost the ball, Brandon Thomas-Asante set up Simms, and his shot was deflected past Lukáš Horníček. Sky Sports reported that it was Simms's first touch. Mfuni, who came on with Victor Torp in the 83rd minute, scored the fourth three minutes later from the left side of the box, assisted by Jay Da Silva. Sky Sports said Mfuni, 18 and on loan from Manchester City, scored his first senior goal and became Coventry's youngest Premier League scorer.

Turning points
There were no red cards and no VAR interventions were reported. The penalty decided the shape of the game: Coventry led for 84 minutes and spent much of that time defending. They made 32 clearances to Newcastle's 25 and committed only three fouls in the match. Milan van Ewijk was booked in the 66th minute and Joelinton in the 81st, for a foul in the same minute as the third goal. Joelinton was making his first competitive appearance since May.
Touré, who had come on in the 59th minute, went off injured in the 90th and was replaced by Dan Burn. Jaissle did not hide his view of the night.
The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing.
Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle head coach, to Sky Sports

What it means for the table
Coventry began matchweek 6 in 18th place with three points and finish it 14th with six, after two wins in a row, level on points with Manchester United in 13th. They have scored five goals and conceded 11 in six games, and are three points clear of the bottom three: AFC Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur have three points each and Fulham two. Sunderland are 17th with four. Coventry are back in the top flight this season, and our study of how promoted teams survive in the Premier League puts their start in context. Lampard kept it measured.
We played like the team we want to be here. There's so much spirit and energy.
Frank Lampard, Coventry manager, to Sky Sports
For Newcastle the defeat was costly. They started the matchweek 9th with eight points and end it 11th, still on eight, with their goal difference down from zero to minus three. A win would have taken them to 11 points and 4th place, above Brentford, Everton and Chelsea, who all have 10. Instead Chelsea stay 6th after their 5-1 win over Bournemouth, and Newcastle are two points behind that group. Manchester City lead with 18 points from six wins. The final matchweek-6 standings are on the Premier League table.
