How the goals came

The first half ended goalless. Hull lined up in a 5-4-1 against Everton's 4-2-3-1, and both their yellow cards came early, for Matt Crooks in the 13th minute and Oliver McBurnie in the 21st. According to Sky Sports, James Tarkowski cleared a Joe Gelhardt shot off the line just before half-time, and Barry headed over from close range in stoppage time.

  • 48', Hull City 1-0: Joe Gelhardt finished from the center of the box with his left foot after a fast break, played through by Sorba Thomas.
  • 55', 1-1: Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall headed in from very close range for Everton after a corner, from Ainsley Maitland-Niles's delivery.
  • 68', Everton 2-1: Thierno Barry scored with his right foot into the top corner, assisted by Dewsbury-Hall.
  • 74', 2-2: Mohamed Belloumi, on for Gelhardt ten minutes earlier, finished with his left foot from the center of the box, assisted by Elliot Stroud.

Dewsbury-Hall had a hand in both Everton goals, scoring the first and setting up the second. Sky Sports reported that Dewsbury-Hall's header was the first goal Hull had conceded at the MKM Stadium this season.

Turning points

Everton thought they had scored in the 37th minute. Brennan Johnson forced the ball in after Konstantinos Tzolakis dropped it, but referee Michael Salisbury went to the pitchside monitor and the goal was ruled out for offside, Sky Sports reported.

The bigger moment was Barry's miss in the 60th minute, when, by the same account, he failed to make contact with a tap-in inside the six-yard box with the score at 1-1. Sky counted eight big chances for Everton, five of them for Barry. He made up for it eight minutes later, but Everton could not hold the lead.

Hull's double change in the 64th minute decided the equalizer: Stroud replaced Ryan Giles and Belloumi replaced Gelhardt, and the two combined for the 74th-minute goal. Hull also brought on Tim Iroegbunam for Crooks, Hidemasa Morita for Regan Slater and Robinio Vaz for Thomas. Everton's David Moyes sent on Tyrique George for Johnson in the 66th minute, then Hayden Hackney and Jake O'Brien at 78 minutes and Tyler Dibling and Charly Alcaraz, for Barry, at 86. Neither side had a player sent off, and Everton finished without a booking after committing four fouls to Hull's 15.

What the managers said

Moyes was unhappy with his side's level despite the point. Speaking to Sky Sports, as reported by beIN SPORTS, he said he could hardly pick out a player who deserved a pass mark and called Everton's two defensive lapses really poor.

Hull have done really well here, but we should have won the game.

David Moyes, Everton manager, to Sky Sports

Hull head coach Sergej Jakirovic, quoted in the same report, pointed to his side's reaction after falling behind, and called it a good point against a side he said was difficult to beat.

I'm very happy with the boys because we showed a great mentality and we equalised.

Sergej Jakirovic, Hull City head coach, to Sky Sports

What it means in the Premier League table

Before matchweek 6, Everton were seventh with nine points and Hull eighth with eight. Everton are now fifth with 10 points from two wins and four draws, and, as beIN SPORTS noted, it is the first time since 2013-14 that they have opened a Premier League season unbeaten in six. They are level on points with fourth-placed Brentford and sixth-placed Chelsea, separated by goal difference, and eight points behind leaders Manchester City, who have won all six.

Hull stay eighth with nine points, one of four clubs on nine from seventh to tenth along with Leeds United, Liverpool and Ipswich Town. They are one point off fourth and six clear of the bottom three, where Tottenham Hotspur sit 18th with three. Belloumi's goal was his third of the season, beIN SPORTS said, and he has been involved in five of Hull's eight league goals.

Matchweek 6 is not quite finished: Coventry City host Newcastle United on Monday 12 October. Newcastle have eight points from five games, so a win would take them to 11, above both clubs. The full standings are in the Premier League table, and the Premier League simulator lets you play out the rest of the season from here. Hull are still unbeaten at home this season, beIN SPORTS noted; what playing at home is worth in general is in our study of home advantage measured across six leagues.
