Most Ligue 1 titles by club

The 2025-26 title was PSG's 14th, a record, and our count from the final tables agrees. Saint-Étienne have won 10, Marseille nine, Monaco and Nantes eight each, Lyon seven, and Bordeaux and Reims six; Lille and Nice have four, and Sète and Sochaux two. Seven clubs won it once: Olympique Lillois, RC Paris, Roubaix-Tourcoing, Strasbourg, Auxerre, Lens and Montpellier, the last in 2011-12.

Olympique Lillois, the first champions, merged with SC Fives in 1944 to form Lille OSC. We count them apart, as the LFP's podium table does, which makes 19 different champions; Wikipedia's list credits Lille with five titles.

Marseille have finished second a record 14 times, so they and PSG have each been in the top two 23 times. Bordeaux and PSG have nine second places and Monaco eight, and Nîmes were runners-up four times, three of them in a row from 1957-58, without ever winning the league.

Ligue 1 winners list: every French champion since 1932-33

The league began in 1932-33 as the National, with two groups of 10 and a final, took the name Ligue 1 in 2002 and has had 18 clubs and 34 games since 2023-24. A win was worth two points until 1993-94, except in 1988-89, and three since 1994-95; from 1973-74 to 1975-76 a bonus point went for scoring three goals, then for winning by three. The league was suspended from 1939-40 to 1944-45 because of World War II.

Most recent first. Points: champion's and runner-up's; two for a win until 1993-94, except 1988-89. 1932-33: two groups, then a final won 4-3. 1992-93: not awarded. 2019-20: halted, ranked on points per game.

PSG since the 2011 takeover, and the more open decades before

Qatar Sports Investments bought PSG in 2011. Since then the club have won 12 of the 15 titles, 80 percent; only Montpellier in 2011-12, Monaco in 2016-17 and Lille in 2020-21 finished ahead of them, and PSG also won the Champions League in 2025 and 2026, two of France's three titles. From 1932-33 to 2010-11, 18 clubs shared 72 titles and none won more than Saint-Étienne's 10, 14 percent.

The 1990s were the most open decade, with seven champions in nine titles, and the five titles of the late 1940s went to five clubs. Dominance came in waves: Nice and Reims won eight of the 10 titles of the 1950s, Saint-Étienne five in the 1960s, Lyon seven in the 2000s and PSG seven in the 2010s; the 2020s have had two champions, PSG five times and Lille once.

Stacked bars of Ligue 1 titles by decade, Paris Saint-Germain against the other clubs, and bars of different champions per decade, from 7 in the 1990s to 2 in the 2020s.

Ligue 1 record points, rescored at three points a win

PSG's 96 points in 2015-16, from 30 wins, six draws and two defeats, are the record, and their 31-point margin over Lyon is the widest. Seasons have run from 26 to 38 games, so we rescored every champion at three points a win per game played: that PSG team leads with 2.53, ahead of Monaco's 2.50 in 2016-17 and PSG's 2.47 in 2024-25.

Saint-Étienne's 1969-70 side, at 2.38 with 25 wins in 34 games, is the best of the two-points era, and last season's PSG, at 2.24, rank joint 14th of the 85 champions of complete seasons with their 2023-24 team. No champion has gone unbeaten; Nantes lost once in 1994-95. Rescoring would have changed three of the 53 titles won at two points a win: Bordeaux instead of Lille in 1953-54 and, on the tiebreaker, Marseille instead of Sète in 1933-34 and Saint-Étienne instead of Strasbourg in 1978-79.

Back-to-back Ligue 1 titles: Lyon's seven in a row and PSG's five

Lyon's seven straight titles, from 2001-02 to 2007-08, are the French record, and PSG's current run of five, from 2021-22, is the second-longest. Saint-Étienne (1966-67 to 1969-70), Marseille (1988-89 to 1991-92) and PSG (2012-13 to 2015-16) won four in a row, and Marseille also finished first in 1992-93. The champion has retained the title 27 times in 86 chances.

Seven in a row is longer than the record runs in La Liga, five, and English football, four, but short of Juventus's nine in Serie A and Bayern Munich's 11 in the Bundesliga.

Closest Ligue 1 title races and final-day deciders

Five titles ended level on points, the latest Lens's on goal difference over Metz in 1997-98, and 15 more were won by a single point. Since 1945-46, 26 of the 79 titles decided over a full season were still open before the champion's last game, with a rival able to reach its points, but only two of the 14 since 2011-12: Montpellier won 2-1 at Auxerre in 2012, and Lille 2-1 at Angers in 2021 to finish a point ahead of PSG.

Since 1945-46, the club alone at the top going into the last round has lost the title only twice. In 1961-62 Nîmes lost 1-0 at Stade Français while Reims and RC Paris won to finish on 48 points, Reims ahead on goal average, and in 2001-02 Lyon beat the leaders, Lens, 3-1 for the first of their seven titles. The first title was settled by a final: Olympique Lillois beat Cannes 4-3 on May 14, 1933.

At the other end, PSG settled 2015-16 on March 13, 2016, with eight games to spare, the earliest by our count, and sealed 2025-26 with a 2-0 win at Lens on May 13, 2026, with one game left.

Longest Ligue 1 title droughts

Lille waited 57 years between titles, from 1953-54 to 2010-11, the longest gap, ahead of Bordeaux's 34, from 1949-50 to 1983-84, and Marseille's 23, from 1947-48 to 1970-71; PSG waited 19, from 1993-94 to 2012-13. Saint-Étienne, without a title since 1980-81, and Reims, since 1961-62, are not in Ligue 1 this season. Among this season's clubs, these former champions have waited longest:

  • Nice: 1958-59, 67 seasons ago
  • Strasbourg: 1978-79, 47 seasons
  • Auxerre: 1995-96, 30 seasons
  • Lens: 1997-98, 28 seasons
  • Lyon: 2007-08, 18 seasons
  • Marseille: 2009-10, 16 seasons

Ligue 1 table 2026-27: PSG top after nine matchdays

After nine matchdays, 81 of the season's 306 games, PSG lead the Ligue 1 table with 20 points from six wins, two draws and a defeat, two more than Lille; Lyon and Paris FC have 17. Lens, last season's runners-up, are ninth with 13, and Le Havre are bottom with two points and no wins.

From 1995-96 to 2025-26, the club with the most points after nine games, alone or level, went on to win the title 16 times in 31 seasons; last season it was PSG. Our Ligue 1 simulator plays out the rest of the fixtures from the current table.

How this was built: the final table of all 88 seasons from 1932-33 to 2025-26, as published on each season's Wikipedia page (for example 2025-26), checked against the table rebuilt from the page's results grid, against Wikipedia's list of champions and the LFP's podium table, and against 28,723 dated results, from engsoccerdata for 1938-39 and 1945-46 to 1993-94 and from football-data.co.uk since 1995-96. Where a table and its grid disagreed on a top-two club, the dated results sided with the table each time. The dates give the standings before the final day, the clinching dates and the leader after nine games. 2019-20 was halted and ranked on points per game. Points per game rescore each champion at three points a win; decades go by the year a season starts. The 2026-27 table is from ESPN's results, which match its standings and the LFP's matchday 9 scores. See our methodology. Data collected November 2, 2026.
