Ryder Cup home team record since 1979
Europe has been the stronger host. Its only home defeats since 1979 came at Walton Heath in 1981 and The Belfry in 1993, and the 14-14 tie at The Belfry in 1989 let it keep the Cup as holders. Since then it has won seven home Ryder Cups in a row, from Valderrama in 1997, the first played in continental Europe, to Rome in 2023.
The United States has lost five of its 12 home Ryder Cups: at Muirfield Village in 1987, Europe's first win on American soil, Oak Hill in 1995, Oakland Hills in 2004, Medinah in 2012 and Bethpage Black in 2025. Its home wins in 2016 and 2021 were part of a run of five straight Ryder Cups won by the host, from 2014 to 2023.
Counted by matches, the edge is smaller but steady. Home teams won 295 of the 644 matches, lost 255 and halved 94, which comes to 342 points to the visitors' 302: 53 percent of the points, or an average margin of 1.7 points per Ryder Cup. The host has won 15 of the 22 editions that produced a winner, 68 percent. That is a larger share than home teams took of decided games in any of the six leagues we measured, from 52.2 percent in the NHL to 58.7 percent in the Premier League, though 22 events is a small sample.
The earlier history is one-sided. Before continental players were added in 1979, the United States won 18 of the 22 Ryder Cups from 1927 to 1977, including all 11 it hosted, according to rydercup.com. Over all 45 editions it leads 27 wins to 16, with two ties; since 1979 Europe leads 13-9, with one tie.

How often the team leading after two days wins the Ryder Cup
Fifteen of the 20 teams that led going into the singles went on to win the Cup, 75 percent. One more, Europe in 1989, drew 14-14 and kept the trophy, and four lost. The size of the lead mattered:
- Led by five points or more: seven of seven won, most recently Europe from 11½-4½ in 2025.
- Led by four: three of five won; the two that lost, Europe in 1999 and the United States in 2012, were caught from 10-6.
- Led by three: two of two won, in 2010 and 2016.
- Led by one or two: three of six won, one tied and two lost, in 1993 and 1995.
Home teams led going into the singles 15 times and won 11 of them, with the 1989 tie and three defeats; visiting teams led five times and won four. In the three Ryder Cups that were level at 8-8, in 1983, 1991 and 2002, the home team won the singles and the Cup each time. In golf's majors, by comparison, a 54-hole lead holds about six times in 10.
The biggest Ryder Cup comebacks in Sunday singles
Four teams have come from behind on the last day since 1979. The record is four points, done twice from 10-6 down, and three of the four comebacks were made by the visiting team:
- 1999, The Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts: the United States trailed 10-6, raced to a 6-0 lead in the singles, won the session 8½-3½ and took the Cup 14½-13½.
- 2012, Medinah Country Club, Illinois: Europe trailed 10-6 and matched the record, winning the singles 8½-3½ and the Cup 14½-13½; Martin Kaymer's 1-up win over Steve Stricker capped it.
- 1995, Oak Hill Country Club, Rochester, New York: Europe trailed 9-7 and won the singles 7½-4½ for a 14½-13½ win, clinched when Philip Walton beat Jay Haas 1 up.
- 1993, The Belfry, England: the United States trailed 8½-7½ and won the singles 7½-4½ for a 15-13 win.
Others got close. At Valderrama in 1997 the Americans won the singles 8-4 after starting five points down and lost by one, and at The Belfry in 1989 they turned a 9-7 deficit into a 14-14 tie that left the Cup with Europe. In all, the trailing team won the singles in nine of the 20 Ryder Cups that had a leader, and in four of those it also won the Cup.
Ryder Cup Sunday singles and the team sessions
The singles have been the American day. Since 1979 the United States has won the singles in 14 of the 23 Ryder Cups and Europe in eight, with a 6-6 split in 2023, and the Americans lead the singles 147½ points to 128½. Europe has done its winning in the team sessions, where it leads the foursomes 99½ to 84½ and the four-balls 99 to 85.

The home edge appears in all three formats: hosts took 55 percent of the foursomes points, 53 percent in singles and 51 percent in four-balls. The biggest singles score in the period is 8½-3½, reached five times, by the United States in 1979, 1999 and 2025 and by Europe in 2006 and 2012. The 1979 singles were played in two sessions, and in 2010 a week of rain in Wales pushed them to the event's first Monday finish; both count here as singles.
Bethpage Black 2025 and the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor
The 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, ended the run of home wins. Luke Donald's European team won all four team sessions and led 11½-4½ going into the singles, the biggest lead after two days in any Ryder Cup since 1979; the only other team to win all four team sessions in that span was Europe at home in 2006. Keegan Bradley's American team then won the singles 8½-3½, a total that includes a half from Viktor Hovland's match against Harris English, not played because of Hovland's neck injury, and Europe held on to win 15-13.
It was the first road win since Medinah in 2012 and Europe's fifth in the United States, after 1987, 1995, 2004 and 2012, and Donald became the second European captain, after Tony Jacklin in 1985 and 1987, to win at home and away.
The next Ryder Cup, on the event's 100th anniversary, will be played at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, with three days of matches from Friday, Sept. 17, to Sunday, Sept. 19, 2027, Ryder Cup Europe has announced. It will be Ireland's second Ryder Cup after The K Club in 2006, which Europe won 18½-9½. Europe will be the home team, with seven straight home wins behind it; the last American win in Europe was at The Belfry in 1993.
