Most Stanley Cups by team
Two of Montreal's Cups came before 1927, in 1916 and 1924, as did two of Toronto's, in 1918 and 1922. Since 1927 the Canadiens are 22-8 in the Final, the Boston Bruins have lost the most Finals, 14 of 20, and the Colorado Avalanche, at 3-0, are the only franchise unbeaten in more than one.

Stanley Cup champions by year, from Ottawa in 1927 to Carolina in 2026
The list starts in 1926-27, the season from which the Cup has been awarded to the NHL's playoff champion. It began in 1893 as a challenge cup, first won by the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, and from 1918 to 1926 NHL champions won seven of eight Finals against western champions. No champion was crowned in 1919, when Montreal's Final against the Seattle Metropolitans was canceled after five games because of Spanish influenza, or in 2005, when the 2004-05 season was lost to a work stoppage.

Stanley Cup champions by decade: from dynasties to parity
Titles were most concentrated from the 1940s to the 1980s, when no decade had more than five different champions. Only three teams won in each of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, with Montreal taking five or six Cups each time. In the 25 six-team seasons from 1942-43 to 1966-67, Montreal won 10 Cups, Toronto 9, Detroit 5 and Chicago 1, and Boston and the New York Rangers none.
As the league grew, from six teams in 1966-67 to 32 today, the Cup spread around. The 1990s had eight champions, the most of any decade, the 21 Cups since the work stoppage have gone to 13 franchises, and 8 of the 22 since 2004 went to first-time winners, most recently Vegas in 2023 and Florida in 2024.

The favorite has faded too. The team with the best regular-season record, or a share of it, won 39 of the 99 Cups and 12 of 18 from 1968 to 1985, but only 8 of the 40 since the Presidents' Trophy was first awarded for that record in 1985-86.
Canadian teams' Stanley Cups
Canadian teams won 41 of the 99 Cups, 9 of the 10 in the 1960s, but none since Montreal in 1993. US-based teams have won all 32 since, and Canadian teams lost the eight Finals they reached in that span, as our study of the Canadian drought details. The last all-Canadian Final was in 1989, when Calgary beat Montreal.
Longest Stanley Cup droughts and teams that have never won
Toronto has gone 58 seasons without a Cup since 1967, the longest drought in NHL history, as our Maple Leafs study shows. Buffalo and Vancouver have played 55 seasons each since 1970-71 without one, and Philadelphia 50 since its last Cup in 1975. The longest drought to end was the New York Rangers' 53 seasons between 1940 and 1994. Ten current teams have never won:
- Vancouver Canucks (in the NHL since 1970-71): lost Finals in 1982, 1994 and 2011.
- Buffalo Sabres (1970-71): lost in 1975 and 1999.
- San Jose Sharks (1991-92): lost in 2016.
- Ottawa Senators (1992-93): lost in 2007.
- Nashville Predators (1998-99): lost in 2017.
- Winnipeg Jets (1999-2000, first as the Atlanta Thrashers), Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild (2000-01), Seattle Kraken (2021-22) and Utah Mammoth (2024-25): no Final yet.
Back-to-back Stanley Cup champions
Defending champions have won 27 of the 98 Cups since 1928, but none has won three straight since the New York Islanders' four from 1980 to 1983, and Montreal's five from 1956 to 1960 are the longest run. There have been seven repeats since, most recently Tampa Bay in 2021 and Florida in 2025, and Florida then missed the 2026 playoffs, 25th of 32 with 84 points, the ninth champion since 1927 to miss the next postseason.
Stanley Cup Final length, Game 7s and overtime winners
The Final has been a best-of-seven since 1939. Of those 87 Finals, 28 went six games, 21 five, 20 were sweeps and 18 went seven; the last sweep came in 1998, the fourth in a row. Home teams have won 13 of the 18 Game 7s, as our study of series comebacks found, the latest Florida's 2-1 win over Edmonton in 2024. The team that opened at home has won 62 of 86, the 2020 Final in the hub city of Edmonton aside, and 17 Cups since 1927 were clinched in overtime, the last by Los Angeles in 2014.
Stanley Cup Final sweeps and Game 7s by era
Evenly matched teams would end a best-of-seven Final in a sweep one time in eight and take it to Game 7 five times in 16, 31 percent, for an average of 5.81 games. The Final used to run short: from 1939 to 1998, 20 of the 60 Finals were sweeps, 33 percent, six of them Montreal's, and only 10 went seven games, 17 percent, for an average of 5.25 games. Since 1999 none of the 27 has been a sweep, which even teams would manage about 3 percent of the time, while 8 went seven games, 30 percent, for an average of 6.07. Home teams won 8 of the 10 Game 7s through 1998 and 5 of the 8 since. The change fits the spread of champions in the decade chart above.
The 2026 Stanley Cup and the 2026-27 season
Carolina's second Cup, after 2006, came on a 16-3 run: sweeps of Ottawa and Philadelphia, a 4-1 series against Montreal and a Final against Vegas clinched 3-0 in Game 6 in Las Vegas, with Jordan Staal winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Since every round became a best-of-seven in 1987, only the 1988 Edmonton Oilers, 16-2, lost fewer games on the way to the Cup.
The 2026-27 season, the NHL's first with 84 games since 1993-94, opened on September 29 with Florida beating Carolina 1-0 in overtime. Through Tuesday, October 20, the Hurricanes were 8-2-1 after a 6-3 win in Vancouver. Follow our NHL standings or play the season out in the NHL simulator.

How the Finals were counted: every Stanley Cup Final from 1918 to 2026, rebuilt game by game from the NHL's statistics API; the Final is each season's last playoff round. Champions match NHL.com's list, which also gives Montreal's 1916 Cup, and opponents and series scores match Wikipedia's. Franchises count across moves and renamings, droughts count regular seasons played through 2025-26, and best record means best points percentage. The sweep and Game 7 comparison covers the best-of-seven Finals since 1939 and treats evenly matched teams as a coin flip in every game. The 2026-27 figures count games finished by October 20, 2026.
