The game kicked off at 20:00 BST. Villa had won 3-2 at Club Brugge on matchday 1, but Unai Emery had said before this game that there were "no excuses" for failing to win any of their previous three home games, AFP reported. Fenerbahce, coached by Ismail Kartal, had drawn 1-1 at home to Roma on matchday 1. Both teams lined up 4-2-3-1, with Zion Suzuki and Ederson in goal; Milan Skriniar captained Fenerbahce and Vedat Muriqi led their attack.

How the match was won

Villa scored three times before the break, as they had at Club Brugge. The opener came after a corner: a Matteo Guendouzi header fell to Manzambi, and his shot deflected off Skriniar past a wrong-footed Ederson, according to AFP. The goals in order:

  • 12' Aston Villa 1-0 Fenerbahce: Johan Manzambi, a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner after a corner.
  • 31' Aston Villa 2-0 Fenerbahce: Nicolas Jackson, a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, set up by Boubacar Kamara.
  • 39' Aston Villa 3-0 Fenerbahce: Nicolas Jackson again, a right-footed shot from the right side of the box into the bottom left corner, from a Ross Barkley pass.
  • 68' Aston Villa 4-0 Fenerbahce: Ross Barkley, a right-footed penalty into the bottom left corner.
  • 72' Aston Villa 5-0 Fenerbahce: Ross Barkley, a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner, set up by Ibrahim Mbaye.
  • 90' Aston Villa 6-0 Fenerbahce: Tammy Abraham, a right-footed finish from very close range into the top left corner, set up by Alysson.

Jackson's first came after Fenerbahce gave the ball away and Kamara found him on the edge of the area; his second was a low drive from 18 yards that Ederson could only push into his own net, per AFP. Manzambi turned 21 on the day of the match, and AFP reported that he is the second player to score on his Champions League debut on his birthday. Fenerbahce had their moments in the first half: Suzuki saved from Muriqi in the 17th minute and Oguz Aydin hit the crossbar in the 34th, Sky Sports reported.

Turning points

The penalty came after Manzambi was tripped by Ismail Yüksek, per PA, and Barkley took the kick rather than Jackson, who was on two goals. Asked by TNT Sports whether he had wanted it for a hat-trick, Jackson said:

Yeah, I wanted to take it, but there are rules.

Fenerbahce made a triple change in the 69th minute: Bartug Elmaz for Yüksek, Romelu Lukaku for Muriqi and Dorgeles Nene for Mason Greenwood, who had been taunted by the home fans on his return to English football, PA reported. Three minutes later Barkley's shot from Mbaye's cross deflected in off Elmaz for the fifth, according to AFP.

Emery sent on Alysson for Kamara and João Gomes for Manzambi in the 73rd minute and Abraham for Jackson in the 78th; Abraham scored 12 minutes later from Alysson's cross. ESPN's match data lists the last two changes, Alejandro Garnacho for Mbaye (79th minute) and Leon Goretzka for Barkley (83rd), as injury substitutions. Fenerbahce's two yellow cards went to Guendouzi (42nd minute) and Aydin (78th); Villa were not booked, and there were no red cards.

The records

Sky Sports said it was Villa's biggest win in major European competition and their biggest under Emery in any competition, and Fenerbahce's heaviest defeat in the Champions League. Sky also noted that Villa and Paris Saint-Germain are the only teams to score three first-half goals in both of their first two games of this season's competition; Villa are the second English club to do that in the European Cup, after Leeds United in 1969-70. AFP and PA both described it as Villa's first home win of the season.

This is not acceptable. We apologise to all the supporters of the club.
