The game kicked off at 20:00 BST. The two clubs had opened the league phase with opposite results: Atlético lost 2-1 at Liverpool on matchday 1, while Manchester United beat Sabah FK 4-0 at home. United came to Madrid out of form, and this defeat extends their run without a win to five games in all competitions, Sky Sports reported. Our matchday 2 preview set out what was at stake for both sides.

How the match was won

Diego Simeone's side started in a 4-4-2 with Jan Oblak in goal; Michael Carrick's United lined up 4-2-3-1, with Senne Lammens in goal and Bruno Fernandes as captain. Atlético needed less than a minute to go ahead. Sky Sports timed the opener at 47 seconds: a simple ball over the top found Álex Baena, who squared it for Barrios to score.

  • 1' Atlético Madrid 1-0 Manchester United: Pablo Barrios, a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the middle of the goal, assisted by Álex Baena.
  • 79' Atlético Madrid 2-0 Manchester United: Ademola Lookman, a right-footed shot from very close range after a fast break. The Independent reported that he scored from the rebound after Lammens saved a shot from Jonathan David.

Atlético could have been further ahead by half-time. Johnny Cardoso had a goal ruled out just before the break because Marcos Llorente was judged to have handled the ball in the build-up, and Julián Álvarez hit the post with a volley from a Barrios pass, according to Sports Mole. United had their moments too: Bryan Mbeumo saw a deflected shot go narrowly wide, and Fernandes hit the bar, Sky Sports reported.

Turning points

Both managers went to the bench around the hour. Barrios, the scorer, was replaced by Marc Pubill in the 60th minute, and Jonathan David came on for Lee Kang-In in the 61st. Carrick made a triple change in the 66th minute: Joshua Zirkzee for Youri Tielemans, Mason Mount for Carlos Baleba and Amad Diallo for Marcus Rashford, who had been booked for a foul in the 52nd minute. Simeone answered in the 71st minute, sending on Lookman for Baena and Morten Hjulmand for Álvarez.

The game turned on the red card in the 74th minute. Yoro was judged to have denied David a clear goalscoring opportunity after the two came together just inside United's half, and referee Glenn Nyberg showed him a straight red card after an on-field review, according to Sky Sports. Play had initially gone on before the VAR recommendation, Sports Mole noted, and The Independent said it was the first red card of Yoro's career. Pundits questioned the decision.

It is soft! No way, that should not be a red.

Five minutes after the sending-off, Atlético scored their second, Lookman finishing eight minutes after coming on. Carrick then replaced Ayden Heaven with Harry Maguire and Fernandes with Matheus Cunha in the 80th minute. Robin Le Normand came on for Giuliano Simeone in the 88th minute and was booked the same minute, Atlético's only yellow card. There were no penalties.

What it means

After two league-phase games the two clubs have the same record: one win, one defeat and three points. Atlético, beaten 2-1 at Liverpool on matchday 1, have their first win of the league phase and a goal record of three scored and two conceded. United, who opened with the 4-0 home win over Sabah FK, have scored four and conceded two. Nine matchday 2 games are still to be played on Wednesday 14 October, including Manchester City v Paris Saint-Germain and AS Roma v Real Madrid.

For United the result adds to a difficult start to the season under Carrick. The game was also Rashford's first Champions League appearance for United since November 2023, against FC Copenhagen, Sports Mole noted.
