City arrived for the 20:00 BST game top of the Premier League after a 3-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, AFP reported, and the defeat was the first of the season for Enzo Maresca's side, as Sky Sports noted. Sky described PSG as the reigning back-to-back European champions. Pep Guardiola, who left City at the end of last season, watched from the stands on his first return to the Etihad since, according to AFP.

It was also City's first home game since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules last month, AFP reported; ESPN noted that City deny wrongdoing and have appealed. ESPN's coverage of the match carried this comment on the case from the PSG manager:

The trophies you win on the pitch remain on the pitch.

How PSG went 3-0 up by the 32nd minute

City started in a 4-2-3-1 with Donnarumma, a former PSG goalkeeper, in goal and Haaland up front. PSG lined up 4-3-3, with Matvei Safonov in goal and Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Dembélé, Doué and Akliouche all in the starting XI. Safonov palmed a shot onto his own crossbar in the 12th minute, The Analyst noted. A minute later PSG were ahead:

  • 13' Manchester City 0-1 PSG: Désiré Doué, a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, assisted by Fabián Ruiz.
  • 15' Manchester City 0-2 PSG: Ousmane Dembélé, a header from the right side of the six-yard box into the bottom left corner, set up by Doué.
  • 32' Manchester City 0-3 PSG: Vitinha, a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner, assisted by Warren Zaïre-Emery.
  • 53' Manchester City 1-3 PSG: Erling Haaland, a header from the center of the box into the top right corner, from an Iliman Ndiaye cross.
  • 62' Manchester City 1-4 PSG: Maghnes Akliouche, a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, assisted by Dembélé.
  • 75' Manchester City 2-4 PSG: Haaland again, a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom left corner, set up by Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Doué's opener came on a counterattack and beat Donnarumma at his near post, and two minutes later Dembélé headed in at the far post after a one-two with Doué, per AFP. Sky Sports credited Zaïre-Emery's flick for the third goal. On the fourth, Donnarumma got a hand to Akliouche's shot, but the ball looped up and spun back into the net, AFP reported, and Sky Sports put the goal down to his poor handling.

Maresca's half-time triple change

Maresca made a triple change at half-time: Ndiaye for Jérémy Doku, Matheus Nunes for Rúben Dias and Bouaddi for Rayan Cherki. Two of the three replacements set up Haaland's goals. Ndiaye crossed for the header eight minutes after the restart, and Bouaddi provided the pass for the second in the 75th minute. The Independent wrote that the change worked, with Bouaddi strengthening the midfield and City creating enough chances to finish with 27 shots. Safonov later saved to deny Haaland a hat-trick, the same report said.

Haaland's first goal took him past Sergio Agüero as City's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League, according to The Analyst, which counts 38 goals for City in 41 matches in the competition. For PSG, Dembélé became only the third player to score in six or more consecutive Champions League appearances for the club, the same analysis said.

PSG had a chance to restore a three-goal lead in the 90th minute. Ferran Torres, a former City player who had replaced Dembélé in the 76th minute, took a penalty, and Donnarumma saved his right-footed kick in the bottom right corner; The Independent noted that each was facing his former club. Luis Enrique also brought on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Doué (66th minute), João Neves for Akliouche (76th), and Lucas Beraldo and Lucas Hernández (84th). City's last change was Nico O'Reilly for Enzo Fernández in the 90th. Antoine Semenyo (61st minute) and Zaïre-Emery (69th) were the only players booked, one from each side, and nobody was sent off.
