Six Nations Champions Since 2000: 27 Titles, 13 Grand Slams and Italy's 18 Wooden Spoons

France has won the Six Nations more often than anyone since Italy joined in 2000: 8 of the 27 championships, four of them Grand Slams, including the last two titles in 2025 and 2026. England has won 7, Ireland and Wales 6 each, and Scotland and Italy none, while Italy has finished last 18 times.

Six Nations winners list since 2000

France's 8 titles came in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2022, 2025 and 2026. England won 7, the last in 2020; Wales won 6, the last in 2021; Ireland won 6, the last in 2024. Ireland has the best match record of the era, 93 wins in 135 games (68.9 percent), ahead of France at 65.2 and England at 64.4.

Nobody has won three in a row, though seven titles were retained, most recently by Ireland in 2024 and France in 2026. Seven championships were decided on points difference, the last of them England's in 2020.

Six Nations Grand Slam winners and Triple Crowns

A Grand Slam, winning all five matches, has happened 13 times in 27 championships. France and Wales have four each, Ireland three and England two. Every other champion won four games out of five: no team has taken the title with three wins or with a draw since 2000.

The last Grand Slam was Ireland's in 2023, so 2024, 2025 and 2026 all went to teams that lost once. The Triple Crown, for a Home Nation that beats the other three, has been won 19 times:

  • Ireland: 9, most recently in 2025 and 2026
  • England: 5, the last in 2020
  • Wales: 5, the last in 2021, all but one of them in a Grand Slam year
  • Scotland: none in the Six Nations era

Six Nations wooden spoon: Italy's record

Italy has finished last 18 times, 12 of them without a win. In 135 Six Nations games it has won 18 and drawn 2, a win rate of 13.3 percent, and nine of those wins came against Scotland. From March 2015 to March 2022 it lost 36 championship matches in a row, until a 22-21 win over Wales in Cardiff.

Its last wooden spoon was in 2023. Since then Italy has finished fifth, fifth and, in 2026, fourth, its best finish, already reached in 2007 and 2013. The two wins of 2026, against Scotland and England, equal its best season, and the 23-18 win over England in Rome on 7 March was its first against them in 27 Six Nations meetings.

The spoon has moved to Wales, last in 2024, 2025 and 2026 and without a win in the first two of those seasons. Wales lost 15 Six Nations matches in a row before beating Italy 31-17 in Cardiff on the final day of 2026. The full count of last places:

  • Italy: 18, the last in 2023
  • Wales: 4 (2003, 2024, 2025, 2026)
  • Scotland: 4 (2004, 2007, 2012, 2015)
  • France: 1 (2013)
  • England and Ireland: never

Scotland is the only Home Nation without a Six Nations title. Its best finish is third, reached six times, most recently in 2026.

Six Nations home advantage by nation

The home team has won 243 of the 405 matches, 60.0 percent, with 8 draws. The rate has barely moved: 60.0 percent from 2000 to 2009, 60.7 from 2010 to 2019 and 59.0 since 2020. Leaving out every match involving Italy only nudges it to 61.9 percent.

England has the strongest home record, 54 wins in 67 games at Twickenham (80.6 percent) against 48.5 percent away, the widest gap of the six. Ireland is the best traveler, winning 58.2 percent of its away games. Italy has won 20.9 percent at home and 5.9 percent away.

The 19 matches played without spectators, four in October 2020 and all 15 in 2021, went the other way: home teams won 9 and lost 10, too few games to prove much. The schedule matters too: 8 of the 13 Grand Slams came in a year when the winner had three home games rather than two.

Two bar charts of Six Nations win rates, 2000 to 2026. At home: England 80.6 percent, Ireland 79.4, France 76.5, Wales 55.9, Scotland 46.3, Italy 20.9. Away: Ireland 58.2 down to Italy 5.9.

Does the opening-weekend winner win the Six Nations?

Usually: 24 of the 27 champions won their first match. Only three lost it and still took the title: France in 2006, beaten 20-16 at Murrayfield; Wales in 2013, beaten 30-22 at home by Ireland; and England in 2020, beaten 24-17 at the Stade de France. No champion has started with a draw.

The reverse is weaker: of the 80 opening-weekend winners, 24 won the title, 30 percent. A first-round win is close to a requirement, not a guarantee.

How bonus points changed the Six Nations table

The championship adopted bonus points in 2017: four points for a win, two for a draw, one for scoring four or more tries, one for losing by seven or fewer, and three extra for a Grand Slam, so that a team with five wins always finishes first. Until 2016 a win was worth two points and a draw one.

Recomputing the ten tables since 2017 under the old two-point system changes no champion and no wooden spoon, and the order only twice. In 2021 France, Ireland and Scotland all won three games, and bonus points lifted France from fourth to second. In 2024 Scotland, with two wins and three losing bonus points, finished above Italy, which had two wins and a draw: the only time since 2017 that a team finished above one with a better record.

Run the other way, the bonus system would have changed two titles before 2017: Ireland instead of France in 2007, when France won on points difference by four points, and England instead of Wales in 2013. Teams then played to different incentives, so that is a description of the tables, not a claim about what would have happened.

Matches since 2017 have averaged 5.67 tries, against 4.10 from 2000 to 2016, and a team scored four or more tries in 30.3 percent of its games, up from 16.3 percent. 2023 and 2026 each produced 14 try bonus points, the most in any season since 2017. Law changes and coaching pushed the same way, so not all of that rise belongs to the bonus point.

Who won the 2026 Six Nations

France retained the title on 21 points, two ahead of Ireland; both won four games, but France earned five try bonus points to Ireland's three. It opened with a 36-14 win over Ireland and closed by beating England 48-46 at the Stade de France with a last-minute Thomas Ramos penalty. Its only defeat, 50-40 at Murrayfield, was the most it had conceded in the Six Nations since 2015.

Ireland won the Triple Crown for the second year running, finishing with a 43-21 win over Scotland in Dublin. Scotland was third, Italy fourth, England fifth with one win and Wales last. No team won the Grand Slam.
