A second division is really two competitions stacked in one table. At the top, the two automatic places, where the pace is close to what wins a league. Below that, a scramble for a play-off spot that can be reached on a mid-table record. We counted both, over the six completed seasons from 2020-21 to 2025-26, in the four second tiers the site covers.
Four leagues, four ways up

England changed its format this year. From 2026-27 the Championship play-offs take six teams: third and fourth go straight to the semi-finals, and fifth to eighth play one-leg quarter-finals first. The numbers below cover the six seasons from 2020-21 to 2025-26, when the last play-off place was sixth, so in England the new last place, eighth, will cost less than the figures show.
Italy is the outlier: six teams in the play-offs out of twenty, a third of the league, and a rule that switches them off altogether. If third finishes more than fourteen points clear of fourth, third goes up without playing, which has happened once in Serie B history, in 2006-07. France is the tightest, with three teams for one place.
What the two automatic places cost

The Championship is the hardest promotion in this group and it is not close in absolute terms: a median of 91 points for second place, with 100 needed in one of these six seasons. Part of that is length, since forty-six games bank more points than thirty-eight, which is why the last column matters more than the first. Per game, second place costs 1.98 in England, 1.92 in Italy, 1.89 in France and 1.83 in Spain.
Nearly two points a game, sustained for nine months, is roughly what it takes to win a mid-sized European first division. That is the bar for finishing second in the Championship, and it is why the club that misses it by a point is rarely the one that recovers in the play-offs.
And what the play-off door costs
Here the four part company. Serie B's eighth place has taken a median of 51.5 points, 1.36 a game, which is a losing record dressed as a promotion campaign: in 2025-26 it took 49, and US Avellino were the team it let in. The drop from second to eighth in Italy is 21.5 points. In Spain, where only four teams get in over forty-two games, the same drop is 9.5.
That gap is the whole argument about play-offs. A twenty-point chasm between the last automatic place and the last play-off place means the tournament at the end regularly promotes a team that finished a long way behind the ones it beat. England's version is nearly as wide at 18 points, which is what makes its play-off final the game it is.
Third place, the seat nobody wants
The clearest illustration of what that gap means arrived in 2024-25. Sheffield United finished third in the Championship on 90 points, more than second place needed in two of these six seasons, and went into the play-offs anyway because the two clubs above them had both reached 100.
That is the structural risk of a two-up format: third place is not a near miss, it is a different competition. The median third-placed team takes 85 points in England and 66.5 in Italy, and in both countries that season ends in a semi-final against a team that finished well behind.
What it means if you follow one of them
- England: watch the 91 line. Get there and you are up; a point short and you are in a four-team lottery that 73 points can enter.
- Italy: the table lies for half the season. Eighth place, worth about 51.5 points, keeps two-thirds of the league technically alive into April.
- Spain: the two lines are closer together than anywhere else, 77 and 67.5, so the Spanish second tier is the one where a good run in March genuinely changes which competition you are in.
- France: three teams for one place, and the smallest field of the four now that Ligue 2 has moved to eighteen clubs and thirty-four games.

Ligue 2 dropped from twenty clubs to eighteen in 2024-25, so its recent seasons are thirty-four games rather than thirty-eight; the per-game column is there precisely so that leagues of different lengths can be compared at all.
