About the Championship simulator
With the Championship simulator you can settle the 2026-27 promotion race yourself: enter a score for any match still to be played, or let the model complete the season, and the table shows who would go up automatically, who would make the playoffs and who would drop to League One.
The 2026-27 season brings the first change to the playoff format since 1989-90: the top two still go up automatically, but six clubs, from third to eighth, now enter the playoffs instead of four. The bottom three are relegated, and results already played stay locked at their real scores.
How to use the Championship simulator
- Enter a scoreline for any open fixture and the projected Championship table re-sorts at once.
- Hand the rest to the model with Simulate season, or use Simulate matchday to fill in the current round only.
- Nothing already played can be changed: those matches count with their real scores.
- Clear wipes the slate, deleting your scores and the model's alike.
- Marked rows show the automatic promotion places, the playoff places and the relegation zone, as in the live Championship table.
Championship simulator FAQ
How does the Championship simulator rate clubs that changed division?
It rates every club from last season's tables across the English pyramid, with a step between divisions, so the three sides relegated from the Premier League and the three promoted from League One sit on the same scale as the rest. Goals in each simulated match then follow a Poisson distribution.
How do the new six-team Championship playoffs work?
Fifth hosts eighth and sixth hosts seventh in one-off eliminators. The winners join third and fourth in two-legged semifinals, where third meets the lowest-placed survivor and the higher-placed club is at home in the second leg. The winners meet in the final at Wembley for the last promotion place.
Can I check promotion scenarios for one club?
Yes. Enter scores only for that club's remaining fixtures, using the results you expect, and the table works out where those points would leave it: in the top two, the playoff places, mid-table or the bottom three.
